News readers are available in many forms, and which one is right for you depends largely on what you intend to use it for. If you only intend to read text discussions, even Outlook Express may do quite well. If you on the other hand intend to read binary groups, where large files are split into multiple messages which the reader has to decode and assemble, then you need a more advanced news reader.

Examples of this kind are, for Windows:

Alt.Binz (Freeware)
Alt.Binz is a new advanced multiserver newsreader for binaries. It incorporates checking the downloaded files, auto unpausing missing PAR2 blocks, repairing, and finally unraring them, and many other options. Various usenet search engines fully supported, browsing groups, searching for files and importing them for download is made simple in this newsreader.
Newsleecher
NewsLeecher is a Usenet downloading (leeching) application. It downloads movies, pictures, MP3 files, and software applications in a snap, and uses it's inline engine to assemble and decode all the downloads. The powerful feature set and state-of-the-art user interface makes it an application "you simply can't live without" if you are a serious Usenet leecher.
NewsBin Pro
NewsBin is a program that automatically discovers, downloads, decodes, reassembles any binary attachment including movies, music, pictures, even software across multiple groups and servers simultaneously. Some of NewsBin's featues are: yEnc encoding support, individual server and group filters, corrupt post detection, multi processor support, and limit the bandwidth NewsBin can use. NewsBin Pro is only intended for downloading from binary newsgroups, and is not recommended for text group use.
GrabIt (Free)
Popular binary newsreader with many useful functions, including a built-in usenet search function.
Usenet Explorer
Usenet explorer is an advanced Multiserver, multi windows, multitasking newsreader for both text and binaries which surpasses all binary downloaders in terms of reliability and performance. It is very versatile but at the same time has extremely low memory consumption and processor usage . (Some other newsreaders are real momory hogs.) It also has an integrated indexing service, and a powerful binary/text poster is included.
